Probably the easiest and quickest way to monetize your blog is to ad Google Adsense to your blog. The first thing to do is to add a free Google Adsense plugin to your Wordpress blog.

While reading this article if you need to see the images more clearly just click/double-click on the image to open it in a separate window then you can resize the image window using Ctrl+Shft++ to zoom in on the image or Ctrl+- to zoom out or Ctrl+0 to reset the image to normal size, OR use the magnifying icon located in the lower right corner of the Internet Explorer browser window.

This article assumes the following:

  • you already have setup a Google Adsense account
  • you have a Wordpress blog web site already setup and working properly, including the ability to install plugins
  • you are using Wordpress version 3.1
  • you know how to use the 'Copy & Paste' feature of your operating system

After logging in to your Wordpress web site click on "Plugins".

Next, click the "Add New" button near the top of the page.

Wordpress is very easy to manage including adding and managing plugins and themes. But Wordpress takes managing your blog a step furthur by allowing you to search for and install plugins and themes from within the Wordpress administrators interface/console. Let's search for a Google Adsense plugin.

In the search box the term we are going to search for is 'Adsense' because we are only interested in 'Adsense' at the moment and not other plugins related to Google. After entering 'Adsense' as the search term click 'Search Plugins'.

As you can see in the upper right hand corner of the search results we found 285 plugins that have something to do with 'Adsense'. Since this tutorial is not about which is the best Google Adsense plugin, we will just use the one at the top of the list. Click on "Install Now" under the name of the plugin.

You will need to click the "OK" button to confirm that you want to install this plugin.

After the plugin is installed click on "Activate Plugin" so we will be able to use it on our Wordpress blog.

The next thing we need is our Google Adsense code to insert into the plugin so that the plugin knows specifically from which of our Adsense Ads to retrieve the ads and also to which ad the impressions and clicks are recorded.

Click on the "My ads" tab near the top.

Again, this tutorial is only about adding Google Adsense to our Wordpress blog so we are only going to set some very basic information concerning the ads that we want to show on our site. After setting the name, size and ad type click the "Save and get Code" button.

The Google Adsense code that we need to 'Copy & Paste' from our Adsense account to our blog will be displayed. Select all the text, be sure you get it all as sometimes there is some of it you must scroll down to see. Copy all of this text to the 'clipboard'.

You may want to paste this code into Notepad and save it for your future reference. You can come back to your Adsense account and retrieve the same code if you need to.

Now let's go back to our Wordpress blog. Under "Settings" click on "Easy Adsense". If you do not see "Easy Adsense" under "Settings" then go back to the "Plugins" section and activate it.

You will need to click on the "Yes" button indicating that your web site does conform to Google's Advertising policies.

This page is some what long the next two images show the upper and lower parts of the page.

Change the information as indicated. This plugin has many features but we will concentrate only on getting the Adsense ads to display on our blog.

Paste your Google Adsense code into the text box under

"Adsense Link-Units Text" deleting all test that is there.

After changing the settings scroll down and click the "Save Changes" button.

The next thing to do is to add the 'Easy Adsense' widget to our blog.

Click on "Appearence" to expand the list then click on "Widgets" to go to the widgets section.

And lastely drag the 'Easy Adsense' widget and drop it on to the "Primary Widget Area". It will now show under the "Primary Widget Area" bar, click the "Save" button to save your changes.

The ads may show immediately or it may take a few minutes.
